Around the middle line with Jaime Polanco

Around the middle line with Jaime Polanco

When approaching the topic of the middle line we are facing one of the fundamental elements in the organization of our actions, which relates to movement, orientation and perception.

The importance Moshe Feldenkrais gives to the middle line becomes obvious when we discover, after delving deeper into his teaching, the amount of lessons that, in a more or less direct way, have an effect in fundamental aspects such as:

– The support of the head

– The organization of twisting

– The regulation of tone in either sides of the body

– The formation of three-dimensional images

– The spacial orientation

– Balance

This advanced training offers a journey starting at the early stages of embryonic development, all the way to complex actions. On the way, the imagination will play a fundamental role, given the conceptual nature of the middle line.

Supported by the analysis of a series of ATMs, we will build an innovative and very dynamic FI lesson, which requires the active participation of our student and has a very deep effect on self-image.

Some of the concepts supporting this advanced training are:

– The middle line, a functional experience with a biological support.

– The quality of the listening in the contact to another.

– The power of working with the eyes.

– The regulation and coordination between cerebral hemispheres.

– The effectiveness of the movement coming from a well organized central axis.

Back in 2018, I started working on the development of a Functional Integration that was deeply connected to the experience of the middle line. After showing the work to some colleagues, in February 2023 I taught it for the first time in the format of an advanced training in Germany, for a group of practitioners that received it with excitement. I’m eager to share again the outcome of these years of research.

Jaime Polanco

Licensed in physiotherapy by the Complutense University of Madrid, I completed my training as a Feldenkrais practitioner at the Feldenkrais Institute, with Paul Newton as my Educational Director.

I teach ATM and FI lessons regularly, mostly in Madrid, and workshops and courses at various entities and universities. And, since 2020, I combine that with working as an Assistant Trainer in trainings in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, China, Russia and Slovenia.

As well as my continuous study into Feldenkrais’ materials and thinking, I’m interested in biomechanics and neuroscience, although in the last years I feel that magic is the art that influences most my way of practicing our profession, for its interest in fields such as attention, perception, memory, imagination and emotions.

I consider myself to be clear and adaptable in my way of teaching and I believe the main job of a teacher is to provide the conditions for the capacities that are already within the students to emerge.
